Michael Campbell - Kiwi boy does good! We, in New Zealand, are very proud of Michael Campbell and his win in the US Open. When Michael's father introduced him to golf as a young lad, he had no idea that he was introducing Michael to his life's passion. Golf was to become Michael's life direction, and it has served him very well. But it has not been an easy road, there have been times when he came very close to quitting, but he didn't. That's the difference between him and many other people: he didn't quit. The going was tough, his faith in himself was challenged every day, but he kept going, he kept pushing forwards. He had a dream, a dream that he believed in. Many of us have dreams, and many of us battle the tough times to the point where we face a wall again and again and again, and we seriously consider quitting. Some of us do quit. We give up the challenge, the pursuit of the dream and we take an easier job and have an easier life. But these dreams of ours, we have them for a reason! They give us direction. Yes, the path may be tough, and rocky. There are difficulties for us to overcome, understandings for us to gain, and if we can stick to the pursuit of the goal we will be a better person and we will have achieved something truly worthwhile. Michael knew this. It has been a long road for him, a tough road. What does this teach us? It teaches us that it does not matter how long it takes us to reach the goal. I do believe, however, that we need to be very sure of our goal. Is it a passing fad, or is it a true passion? It is a whim and a fancy, or a soul demanding purpose? When you are sure of your goal, go for it. Chase it down and grab it with both hands. Can you imagine one day finding out that you were mere inches from victory when you quit? To see Michael Campbell sink that winning putt, the boy from New Zealand who had a dream...wow! It doesn't matter who you are, or where you are from, your dreams are as valid as anyone else's. Don't let people tell you otherwise. Whatever you want to achieve, plan the steps you need to take, work on the skills you need to perfect, and don't give up. I'm not saying it will be easy, I'm just saying that you need to validate your dreams. If Michael Campbell had quit, would he have ever felt truly satisfied? Would he have always wondered what might have happened if he had not quit when he did, if he had stuck it out a few more years? Would he have felt a life long regret that he gave up his dream? I bet that right about now he is celebrating the fact that he did not give up, as much as he is celebrating his win. Michael serves as a wonderful reminder that our dreams have value, and purpose. Don't give up.
