Confessions

I always scoffed at camera phones. Always. Vociferously.

Meanwhile, I was ridiculously sentimentally attached to my Samsung A800 cell phone. I loved the size, the shape, loved the way it felt so comfortable in my hand. Heartbreak when it began to fail, though I knew it was getting old and obsolete. Further heartbreak when there was nothing on the market as nice. The design changes made to the S300 were sad, and ugly—where was the arc service light? And the S500 came with a tragic screen display, great big ugly fonts, and a cheap plastic construction that felt like it would fall apart on the first drop—we may not admit that we occasionally drop our phones, but I think that most of us do, at least once!

Joy, when the release of the Samsung E600 was announced and early reviews released. No, I didn’t want a camera phone at all, I wanted a phone that looked like my A800 and this one was close. The exterior is a cross between the S300 and the A800 (yay for the return of the arc light—okay so it is purely cosmetic and superficial, but it’s pretty!), with the addition of the small camera ‘eye’. The phone is just a bit wider and thicker than the A800 I loved so much, but it still fits my phone pouch, and it feels perfect in my hand. The screen clarity is brilliant and I would compare the quality to my laptop.

Shocking discovery.

The one issue that came as a shock to me was…I am a hypocrite! All that talk about the stupidity of cameras on a cell phone? Well, I am snappier than anyone I know. I snap pictures all the time, whether it be my children, our kittens, the budgie, the garden, the queue at the supermarket, my lunch at a café, my friend’s lunch at the café, I am a snap happy person. I am the awful breed of person who just has to take pictures of everything she sees. And I love the fact that everywhere I go I have a camera.

Crow Pie.

So, what was that about camera phones? …..ahem, ahem, umm….camera phones are really great, No, I mean it, they are really great. A call comes in and a picture of my son or daughter pops up, it’s just so darn cute—every mother should have a camera phone! I can take pictures of anything anywhere, I can choose whatever picture I like for my wallpaper, I can take pictures of famous art works at the museum and put that on my main screen.  Of course, my children now run when they see me pull out the camera phone, but hey, a child in retreat makes a great shot too.

I finally get it. I finally understand why people love their camera phones so much! For everything that my E600 can do I might as well call it the Swiss Army Cell phone...in fact, I wonder if there is a Swiss Army Knife-Cellphone?...Now that would be really cool!
